Now what?
The hardware is only half the job. A freshly built gaming PC with default settings leaves 15–30% of its performance on the table. Your RAM is probably running at half its rated speed. Your GPU drivers are missing. Windows is doing things in the background that actively hurt your frame rate.
This checklist walks you through every step from first boot to your first game launch — in the right order, so nothing gets missed. Follow it once and your system will be running at full potential from day one.

Step 1: Enable XMP or EXPO
This is the single biggest free performance boost most builders miss.
Your DDR5-6000 kit? It's running at 4800 MT/s right now. Your DDR4-3600 kit? It's at 2133 MHz. That's because RAM ships at a safe "JEDEC" default speed, and your motherboard respects that until you tell it otherwise.
How to enable it:
- Enter BIOS (press Delete or F2 during POST — your motherboard manual tells you which).
- Find the XMP (Intel) or EXPO/DOCP (AMD) setting. It's usually on the main page or under an "OC" or "Tweaker" tab.
- Select Profile 1 and save.
What you gain: 10–25% improvement in CPU-bound games. This is not optional — it's enabling the speed you already paid for.

Step 2: Enable Resizable BAR / Smart Access Memory
Resizable BAR (Intel) and Smart Access Memory (AMD) let your CPU access the full GPU VRAM at once instead of in small 256 MB windows. Most modern motherboards support it, but it's often disabled by default.
Where to find it: BIOS → Advanced → PCI Subsystem Settings → Re-Size BAR Support → Enabled. Also enable "Above 4G Decoding" if prompted.

Step 3: Set Boot Order
Set your NVMe SSD as the first boot device. This sounds basic, but if you have multiple drives, the BIOS might default to the wrong one — or worse, try to boot from a USB drive you forgot to unplug.
Step 4: Verify RAM Is Detected Correctly
While you're in BIOS, check that:
- Both sticks are detected — if you installed 2x16 GB, the BIOS should show 32 GB total. If it shows 16 GB, one stick isn't seated properly. Power off, reseat it, and try again.
- Dual-channel mode is active — most BIOS screens show "Dual" somewhere near the memory info. If it says "Single," your sticks are in the wrong slots. Check your motherboard manual: most boards use slots 2 and 4 (counting from the CPU) for dual-channel with two sticks.
Running in single-channel mode cuts your memory bandwidth in half. That's a significant bottleneck, especially in CPU-bound titles.
Step 5: Check CPU and Cooler Are Working
Look at the CPU temperature reading in BIOS. At idle (BIOS counts as idle), you should see:
- Air cooler: 30–45 °C
- AIO liquid cooler: 25–40 °C

Phase 2: Install Windows
With BIOS configured, you're ready to install Windows.
Step 6: Install Windows 11 (or 10) From a USB Drive
Use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool on another PC to create a bootable USB drive with the latest Windows 11. Install to your fastest NVMe drive.

During installation:
- Disconnect your Ethernet cable or skip Wi-Fi setup if you want a local account instead of a Microsoft account.
- Choose your NVMe SSD as the install drive. If you have multiple drives, unplug the others during installation to avoid accidentally formatting the wrong one.
Step 7: Install Chipset Drivers First

- AMD: Download AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition from amd.com/drivers. Use "Factory Reset" during installation.

Step 9: Install Remaining Drivers
Install in this order:
- Networking drivers (if not auto-detected by Windows) — LAN and Wi-Fi
- Audio drivers (Realtek or whatever your board uses)
- Peripheral firmware — mouse, keyboard, headset software
Skip the bloatware your motherboard manufacturer bundles. You don't need RGB control suites, "AI overclocking" tools, or system monitors running at startup. They consume CPU cycles and RAM for no gaming benefit.
Phase 3: Windows Optimization
Windows out of the box is configured for general use, not gaming. These changes take ten minutes and make a measurable difference.
Step 10: Set the Power Plan
- Open Settings → System → Power → Additional power settings.
- Select High Performance. If it's not visible, click "Show additional plans."

Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) is enabled by default in Windows 11. In most cases this is fine, but some games stutter with it on. If you experience frame time spikes in specific titles:
Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings → turn off "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling."
Test with it on first. Only disable it if you notice stuttering issues.
Step 13: Configure Game Mode and Game Bar
- Game Mode (Settings → Gaming → Game Mode): Leave it ON. Despite old advice to turn it off, Game Mode in Windows 11 2026 correctly prevents Windows Update from installing during gaming and stabilizes frame rates.
- Game Bar (Settings → Gaming → Game Bar): Disable it unless you use it for screenshots or Xbox social features. The overlay consumes a small amount of GPU resources.
- Captures (Settings → Gaming → Captures): Turn off "Record what happened" (background recording). This silently encodes video in the background, costing 3–8% GPU performance at all times.
Step 14: Set Your Monitor to Its Full Refresh Rate
Right-click desktop → Display settings → Advanced display → choose your monitor's maximum refresh rate.
This is the single most common "why does my PC feel slow" issue on new builds. Your 165 Hz monitor defaults to 60 Hz until you change this setting. You paid for high refresh — use it.

Phase 4: Verify and Benchmark
Your system is configured. Now prove it's running at full potential.
Step 15: Run a Bottleneck Scan

A new build can have subtle issues: a RAM stick that's slightly unstable at XMP speeds, a CPU cooler that isn't mounted evenly, a GPU that thermal throttles under sustained load. Stress testing surfaces these before you're mid-game in a ranked match.
Run each for 15–30 minutes and monitor temperatures:

Now run an actual game benchmark to establish your baseline. Good built-in benchmarks:
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider — CPU-bound at 1080p, GPU-bound at 4K. Great for detecting both bottleneck types.
- Cyberpunk 2077 — built-in benchmark with detailed frame time data. Excellent for testing ray tracing and DLSS/FSR.
- 3DMark Time Spy (free demo on Steam) — compare your score against identical hardware online to verify your system is performing as expected.

Step 18: Configure Per-Game Graphics Settings
Don't just set everything to Ultra. Some settings destroy FPS for minimal visual improvement:
- Volumetric fog/clouds: Often a 15–25% FPS hit for a subtle visual upgrade. Set to Medium.
- Shadow quality: Ultra shadows vs. High is almost invisible in motion. Set to High.
- Screen-space reflections: High cost, often replaced by RT reflections anyway.
- Chromatic aberration, film grain, motion blur: Visual preference, but they can mask stutter and add post-processing cost. Disable for competitive games.

Modern upscaling technology is essentially free FPS. If your game supports it:
- NVIDIA GPU: Use DLSS (Quality or Balanced mode). Enable Frame Generation if your card supports it (RTX 40/50 series).
- AMD GPU: Use FSR 3.1 (Quality mode). Enable Fluid Motion Frames if supported.
- Intel GPU: Use XeSS.

Common First-Boot Problems (and Quick Fixes)
"No display output"
- Is your monitor plugged into the GPU, not the motherboard? This is the most common new-build mistake.
- Try each GPU display output. Some default to DisplayPort 1 only.
- Reseat the GPU — pull it out and push it firmly back into the PCIe slot until the latch clicks.
"Only one RAM stick detected"
- Power off, unplug, reseat both sticks. Push harder than feels comfortable — RAM clicks take real force.
- Try each stick individually to identify if one is dead.
- Double-check you're using the correct slots (usually 2 and 4, not 1 and 2).
"Windows says 60 Hz even though my monitor is 165 Hz"
- Use DisplayPort, not HDMI (unless you have HDMI 2.1 on both ends).
- Install GPU drivers first — Windows generic drivers cap refresh rate.
- Check the monitor's own OSD menu. Some monitors have their high refresh rate disabled by default.
